The wait is finally over and as many had expected, the Hyundai Elantra 1.8 GLS took the coveted title as South Africa’s Car of the Year for 2012. The announcement was made by the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists at a Wesbank sponsored banquet at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, attended by top industry representatives.
At the end of last year, 10 finalists were announced that were recently put through a thorough 2-day evaluation by a panel of 30 judges at the Gerotek test facility near Pretoria. Contrary to what some might say, the finalists were not directly compared to one another as they were picked from various market segments. Instead each vehicle was judged on merit and its contribution to a specific motoring class while each jury member was given 25 points in total to allocate to no more than 5 finalists. The final score for the Elantra was 230 points compared to the runner-up’s 155 points – a proud win for Hyundai.
